SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Host Susquehanna University used a run at the
end of the first half to key a 59-46 victory over Shenandoah in the
championship game of the Pepsi/Weis Markets Tip-Off Tournament.
Shenandoah (1-1) held its only lead, 23-19, with just over a
minute to play in the first but the Crusaders (2-1) had other
ideas.
Susquehanna scored the final five points of the first, and then
broke things open with an 18-5 run to start the second.
The game was effectively over at this point as the Hornets
struggled to an 8 for 35 (22.9 percent) shooting performance in the
second half.
The Crusaders eventually expanded their lead out to 20, 52-32,
before Shenandoah briefly made things interesting with a 12-2 run
that cut the deficit to 10 points with 1:41 remaining.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, Susquehanna hit five of six free
throws in the final 61 seconds to ice the victory.
Senior Alexis
Hargbol, with 14 points, and Mandy Johnston, with
10, both earned spots on the All-Tournament team for Shenandoah.
The Hornets host Mary Washington on Tuesday at 6 in its 2009-10
home opener.
