ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Host St. Mary's (Md.) prevented
Shenandoah University from registering a second straight women's
basketball victory by downing the Hornets 73-67 Sunday afternoon in
non-conference action.
Shenandoah (2-2) was seeking its second straight victory over a
Capital Athletic Conference opponent; SU had gone into Thanksgiving
break by downing No. 23 Mary Washington 56-54.
Unfortunately, SMC (1-4) had other ideas.
The Seahawks shot 53 percent from the field in the first half to
take a 40-36 lead and then held on for the six-point victory.
SMC led the entire way, including by 13 points late in the first
half, but the Hornets were able to tie it on three different
occasions in the second.
The last of these, following an Alexis Hargbol layup
at 16:44, tied the game at 44.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the Seahawks scored the next
four points of the game and Shenandoah was never able to get closer
than one point the rest of the way.
Hargbol led four women in double figures with 16 points
while Katherine Flint
and Sierra
Edwards had 14 each and Mandy Johnston 12.
SU is back in action on Wednesday in its USA South opener at
Christopher Newport.
