WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Bridgewater College kept its 2009
football record perfect with a 21-13 non-league football victory
Saturday night over host Shenandoah.
Bridgewater (2-0) quieted the 2457 Sprint Field at Shentel
Stadium fans at the 8:58 mark of the first quarter with a 98-yard
Hagan Driskell to Tyler Beiler TD pass and never looked back
against SU (1-1).
Shenandoah did not get closer than one point following the
Driskell to Beiler TD. Barely four minutes after that touchdown,
junior Anthony
Cordero busted up the middle for a 38-yard TD run
that brought the Hornets to within one, 7-6.
Unfortunately for the capacity crowd, the PAT snap was botched
and SU could not convert on a run attempt for two points.
BC reached into its bag of tricks one play into the second
quarter, faking a 41-yard field goal and getting a 24-yard Patrick
Smoot TD run out of the play.
Lightning struck twice on the first play from scrimmage in the
third - the Eagles Teley Tate, a transfer from Shenandoah, raced
70-yards for a score that gave the visitors a 21-6 lead.
Tate led all rushers with 192 yards and the one touchdown on 22
carries. Bridgewater finished the evening with 235 of its 423 yards
in total offense coming on the ground.
SU had a couple of opportunities to get back in it, but came up
short until QB Vern
Lunsford found Brian
Calloway with a 10-yard TD pass at the 1:49 mark of the
fourth.
The Hornets attempted an on-side kick and it briefly looked like
they would recover, but BC fell on the ball and then ran out the
clock.
In addition to Tate's 192 yards rushing, Driskell finished the
night 9 for 18 for 188 yards.
Keone
Kyle led Shenandoah with 96 yards rushing and Cordero
added 80.
SU hosts Randolph-Macon next Saturday night in its final
non-conference contest of the season.
