FREDERICK, Md. - Shenandoah University snapped a two-match field
hockey losing streak Monday afternoon with a 3-2 overtime
non-league win at Hood College.
The Hornets (3-2) now can tie the 2004 team for the most wins in
school history with one more victory. SU has 12 games remaining on
its regular season schedule, including seven MAC Commonwealth
contests.
Junior Paola
Aguilar tallied the game-winner for SU three minutes into the
sudden victory overtime. The Hornets are now 2-0 in extra time this
season.
After Hood (2-4) took the first seven shots of the game,
Shenandoah drew first blood when junior Kaitlin Sommer scored
in the 28th minute off an assist from Aguilar.
The Hornets took a 1-0 lead into the break as goalkeeper Danielle Lawson
made four saves.
The Blazers tied it at 1-1 with a goal in the 44th
minute and after Aguilar scored at 47:03, the hosts tied it for a
second time when Maria Smith scored on a scramble in front of the
cage at 61:29.
The remaining 8:31 of regulation passed, setting SU up for its
second overtime game of the season.
Hood had a pair of penalty corners to start the overtime, and
Shenandoah was able to clear both and get the ball into its
offensive end. Following a corner of its own at 71:35, Aguilar
found herself wide open 70 seconds later and knocked home the
game-winning goal.
Shenandoah opens MAC play on Saturday with a 3:00 contest
against Albright.
Lawson finished the game with eight saves.
