WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team
earned its first win of the 2009 season with a 3-0 whitewash over
Marymount University Friday night on Sprint Field at Shentel
Stadium.
Shenandoah (1-1) used a pair of goals in the first half to open
a comfortable lead and cruise to the non-league win over the Saints
(0-2).
Freshman Amber Womack and
sophomore Jessi Dennis hooked up
on those first-half tallies - with Dennis feeding Womack in the
22nd minute before Womack returned the favor in the 44th.
Womack's goal, which proved to be the game-winner, snapped a
string in which SU had numerous excellent scoring opportunities but
was unable to find the back of the net.
Finally, after eight missed shots, Dennis received a long
through pass and headed the ball into space for Womack just outside
the 18-yard box. Womack gathered in the service and after dribbling
to 10-yards, ripped her shot past MU keeper Beth Wiggins.
Shenandoah kept up the pressure following this goal and got the
Dennis tally in the 44th minute and a unassisted rip by
freshman Kirsten Olson in the
67th to provide the final margin of victory.
SU outshot its visitors 20-4 and keepers Kat Terza and Brooke
Strickler made a combined three saves to post the shutout.
The Hornets are off until traveling to Bridgewater for a
non-league contest on Wednesday.
