FERRUM, Va. - Shenandoah University snapped a pair of long
losing streaks Saturday afternoon with a 68-63 USA South Conference
men's basketball victory over host Ferrum.
Shenandoah (5-11, 2-1 USA South) won for the first time since
the 2003-04 season at Ferrum and over the Panthers (8-8, 2-2) for
the first time in the past 10 meetings.
SU had beaten Ferrum since winning 78-71 in overtime at home on
January 26, 2005.
Playing largely without the presence of leading scorer Kevin Kline due to foul
trouble, Shenandoah saw the trio of Wayne Washington,
Chris
Schrader and Kenny Robertson all
step up with double-digit scoring.
Schrader hit what was the back-breaking shot when he canned a
3-pointer with 1:13 to play to give the Hornets a 66-63 lead.
Shenandoah led the rest of the way from this point as FC missed
three of four free throws down the stretch and turned the ball over
on two of its last three possessions.
Washington had one of those two steals and then hit one of two
from the line with 18 seconds remaining to finally ice the victory.
After taking a 30-26 lead into the half thanks to six each from
Robertson, Schrader and Mitch Dudley the
Hornets saw their hosts come all the way back thanks to an 8-2 run
to start the second. The two teams then traded the lead 10 times
and were tied on nine others before Schrader finally gave SU the
lead for good with the three-ball.
Schrader led all scorers with 17 points with Washington adding
14 and Robertson 12.
Henry Hall paced the Panthers with 17.
Shenandoah
completes this weekend trip Sunday afternoon with a 4:00 USA South
Conference contest at Averett.
