WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Greensboro College ended Shenandoah
University's two-game USA South Conference men's basketball winning
streak Saturday afternoon with a 79-73 win before a capacity crowd
at Shingleton Gymnasium.
The Hornets (6-12, 3-2 USA South) shot a season low 39.3 percent
from the line (11 of 28) in the contest to hurt their chances
against the Pride (9-8, 2-2).
Conversely, Greensboro made 18 of its 20 attempts from the
charity stripe (90 percent) while also shooting 45.3 percent (29 of
64) from the field.
The two teams traded the lead and were tied for a total of six
times during the first half before GC finally went on top to stay
with an RJ Smith jumper at the 9:25 mark.
Smith's field goal, one of 11 he had on the night, was part of a
10-0 run that gave the visitors an eight-point advantage with 8:17
to play.
Shenandoah answered that run with a 6-0 spurt of its own, but
would get no closer than two points the rest of the way.
Another 10-0 GC run, this one over a span of 2:01 early in the
second half, basically clinched the contest for the Pride.
Smith did the damage in this one as well with six of team's
points and all coming on layups.
After falling behind by as many as 17, SU gradually chipped away
at the deficit until cutting it to five, 70-65, with 1:58 remaining
following a Mitch
Dudley jumper.
Unfortunately for the home crowd, Smith answered with another
layup 27 seconds later and the Hornets never seriously threatened
again.
Smith led all scorers with 24 points with teammate Adam Powell
adding 16. Powell was also 10 of 10 from the line.
Dudley, along with Kevin Kline had 16
each for SU. Chris
Schrader and Kenny
Robertson rounded out the Hornets double-digit scorers
with 14 and 10, respectively.
Shenandoah is back in action tomorrow against Methodist. Game
time is 4:00 and all gate receipts will be donated to Haitian
earthquake relief.
