Women Dominate Angels

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University put the finishing touches on a perfect USA South Conference weekend slate with a 79-45 women's basketball victory over Meredith College Sunday afternoon.

Shenandoah (9-7, 5-5 USA South) won for the second time in a 26-hour span with the victory over the Avenging Angels (5-9, 4-5).

Holding a 37-26 lead at halftime, SU totally ran away from its visitors by scoring 16 of the first 20 points of the second half.

Now staked to a 53-30 lead following a Crystal Williams layup at the 14:57 mark, the Hornets easily coasted home to its fourth straight win over Meredith and sixth in nine lifetime meetings.

MC was able to cut the deficit to 16 points after going on an 11-4 run against a group of SU reserves before a slightly different group came into ice it with a 14-0 run in the next 3:43.

This run was part of a larger 20-4 run to finish the contest; seven different women scored during the run including three who registered their first points of the game.

Coach Michelle Guyant-Holloway had four women hit in double figures, led by senior Katherine Flint's 13 in 29 minutes. Flint now needs 21 points to become the 15th member of the women's basketball 1000-point club and the second one this season.

Flint's classmate, Alexis Hargbol, surpassed the barrier earlier this season and backed Flint up with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Shenandoah held a slight 45-42 advantage on the glass.

Juniors Amy Rhoderick and Stephanie Holton rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 and 10, respectively. For Rhoderick, it was a new career-high.

Brittany Cornelius paced Meredith with 14 points.

Shenandoah is off until hosting N.C. Wesleyan on Groundhog Day. Game time is 7:00.
