Women Run Away from Bishops

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Shenandoah University used a strong second half to key a 75-42 USA South Conference women's basketball victory over host N.C. Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

After taking a 31-22 lead into halfime, Shenandoah (6-5, 2-3 USA South) completely ran away from the Bishops (0-8, 0-3) with 44 second half points.

NCWC struggled against the Hornets press, making 30 turnovers, and also shot under 16 percent (6 of 37) from the field following the break.

Holding the 11-point lead at the break thanks to a steal and a buzzer-beating layup from sophomore Ashleigh Council, SU completely busted the game open with a 16-5 in the first 7:02 of the second.

From this point on, the Hornets lead did not dip below 19 points the rest of the way.

When Wesleyan got it to that 19-point deficit, following a Samantha Urquhart three-point play with 11:59 remaining, Shenandoah again stepped on the gas with an 18-7 run to turn the contest into a rout.

SU coach Michelle Guyant-Holloway then began to substitute liberally, getting all 14 of her women on the roster into the game for just the third time this season.

Only one Hornets starter, senior point guard Katherine Flint, played more than seven minutes in the second half. Flint saw 11 minutes of action before subbing out for good with 4:22 to play.

Flint led all Shenandoah scorers with 13 points while also adding seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Freshman Nicole Gilbertson backed Flint up with 12 points, Mandy Johnston 11 and Sierra Edwards 10.

Urquhart had over 50 percent of her teams points - she finished with a game-high 22 points to go along with 16 rebounds.

SU is back in action Wednesday evening in a 7:00 USA South Conference game against Mary Baldwin.
