Falcons Soar Over Hockey

WINCHESTER, Va.  – No. 1 Messiah College ended Shenandoah University's field MAC field hockey tenure with an 8-0 Commonwealth victory Wednesday afternoon on Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.

The Falcons (14-2, 7-0 CC) celebrated their first day returning to the top spot in the nation by jumping all over the departing Hornets (8-9, 0-7).

MC scored three goals in the first 15 minutes of the contest as it outshot SU 10-2 during that span.

Kourtney Ehly had what proved to be the game-winner with her unassisted tally in the third minute. The visitors then added goals in the sixth, ninth and 12th minutes to take a 4-0 lead into halftime.

The final 35 minutes brought more of the same, as Messiah scored 38th, 52nd, 57th and 63rd minutes to provide the final margin of victory.

Juliana Hershey led all scorers with three goals, Ehly added two goals and an assist and Julie Barton two assists to round out the multiple-point scorers.

The Falcons outshot SU 36-6 and had 23 of the game's 28 penalty corners.

SU keepers Sarah Clare and Danielle Lawson combined for 16 saves.

Notes: Shenandoah, which has been a part of the MAC for the past two seasons, is leaving the league at the effective at the end of June to join the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Wednesday's game was the last MAC contest for the field hockey program.
