Men Clinch Second

WINCHESTER, Va. - Playing without two starters, Shenandoah University completed a men's basketball season sweep over Averett University Saturday afternoon with a 71-66 USA South Conference victory.

The Senior Day victory completes the first season sweep for SU (10-13, 7-3 USA South) over the Cougars (9-14, 6-5) since 2003-04 and also clinches the second seed at the upcoming USA South Conference Tournament.

With two games remaining in its conference slate, Shenandoah can only be tied in victories by both Averett and CNU. Since the Hornets hold the tiebreaker over both by virtue of regular season sweeps, SU will be no worse than the No. 2 seed.

The Hornets will host the seven seed, either Greensboro or Methodist, on Tuesday, February 23. If the SU women host, the men's game will be at 7:30. If the women are on the road, the contest will start at 7.

Coach Robert Trent Harris, Jr.'s club achieved the win without the services of juniors Kevin Kline and Mitch Dudley. Kline suffered an ankle injury in the Hornets win over Ferrum on Thursday and his status is day-to-day.

Dudley, who has started all but the first three games of the season, broke his hand on Thursday and is likely out for the remainder of the season.

With it Senior Day, Harris started all five of his players in their final season of eligibility and three responded with double-digit scoring.

Kenny Robertson, who had 17 in the Thursday's win, completed his strong week with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

It is his first double-double of the season.

Lenzie Adams added 14 points in his first start since the 2007-08 season and Chris Schrader 13 to round out the senior scorers.

Brandon Bryan led the victors with 16 points in his first relief appearance of the year.

In a game that featured five ties and six lead changes, Shenandoah finally took the lead for good on freshman Corey Levenberry's fastbreak layup with 7:26 remaining.

Levenberry's bucket ignited a 6-0 run that allowed the Hornets to hold at least a three-point advantage for the remainder of the contest.

Averett cut it to that three-point deficit on two occasions, and had possession with the deficit in the final minute, but missed three shots to try and come even closer.

Bryan then iced with a pair of free throws at the 27 second mark.

Ruben Pierce paced AU with 22 points and Brandon Malone added 19.

SU is off until taking on Methodist on Friday at 7:30.
