Baseball Splits on Opening Day

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Shenandoah University opened up its 2010 baseball season Saturday by splitting a pair of non-league games at the Ripken Complex.

After dropping the opener, 11-10, to Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, SU (1-1) came back to defeat Bates (Maine) 9-8 in the nightcap.

The Hornets, who are ranked No. 8 and No.9 in the nation by the ABCA and D3baseball.com, respectively, got four hits and three RBI from junior Kevin Brashears in the opener.

Shenandoah held a 10-8 lead heading into the ninth against the Ospreys before giving up three runs in the ninth to lose. The final two runs were unearned.

Brashears continued to be the story in the nightcap, getting two of the Hornets hits including a home run.

Brashears, who was the Most Outstanding Player of the South Regional last season, drove in a pair of runs in the nightcap.

Junior Bobby Stefanowicz was the winning pitcher in relief.

Complete box scores and a more detailed recap should be available later Saturday evening.

SU completes weekend play with a doubleheader against Richard Stockton Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.
