GREENSBORO, N.C. - Lewis Owenby completed a comeback victory for
host Greensboro College Saturday night with a buzzer-beating
stickback to give GC a 56-54 USA South Conference men's basketball
victory over visiting Shenandoah.
Despite the loss, Shenandoah (10-15, 7-5 USA South) qualifies
for the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host
seventh-seeded Methodist on Tuesday at 7:00.
Greensboro (11-14, 4-8) is the tourney's sixth-seed and travels
to No. 3 Christopher Newport.
N.C. Wesleyan has the bye into the semi-finals as the top seed
while Averett claims the final home game as the four seed. They
will host No. 5 Ferrum.
GC was able to complete the comeback victory as the Hornets went
cold following a Brandon Bryan jumper
in the paint with 9:08 remaining.
Bryan's runner gave SU its largest lead, five points, but would
prove to be the team's last field goal until Bryan hit a 3-pointer
from just off the top of the key at the 1:45 mark.
During this span of 7:23, the Pride were able to come all the
way back to take a 50-49 lead.
Bryan retook the advantage for Shenandoah with the 3-ball after
Chris
Schrader had another jumper in the lane at the 1:04 mark, SU
owned a 54-53 lead.
Chakris Moss tied it for GC by hitting one of two from the line
20 seconds later, and SU took possession with a four-second
difference between the game and shot clocks.
Following a time-out at the 11-second mark, point guard Kenny Robertson
found Schrader for a layup attempt with three seconds remaining.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, Schrader missed the shot and GC
was able to both rebound and get the ball to the other end of the
floor before time expired.
Andre Porter did that work for the hosts and was fouled as he
attempted the game-winning layup. Porter then missed both of his
free throws, setting up Owenby for his game-winning stickback on
the second miss.
Robertson led SU with 13 points with Bryan and Schrader both
adding 10.
Owenby had 12 for Greensboro.
Notes: As per USA South Conference rules, there are no pass
lists for Tuesday's game. All fans, including students, must
purchase a ticket for the game.
