GREENSBORO, N.C. - Host Greensboro College grabbed one of the
two final spots in the 2010 USA South Conference women's basketball
Tournament with a 67-62 victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.
The win for GC (8-15, 6-12 USA South), coupled with Ferrum's
victory over Peace and a Meredith win at N.C. Wesleyan, means that
Greensboro and Meredith claim the final two spots in the eight-team
tourney.
Peace could have qualified with a win in either of last two
games, but lost Thursday at previously winless N.C. Wesleyan and
today at second place Ferrum.
Shenandoah (14-10, 10-8 USA South) loses a chance to tie for
fourth with the defeat. The loss to the Pride is the
15th straight for the program in Greensboro's home
facility.
As the No. 5 seed in the tourney, SU opens play on Tuesday with
a 7:00 quarterfinal round game at fourth-seeded Methodist. MU
swept Shenandoah this season, winning 57-50 in Winchester on
December 5 and 47-40 in Fayetteville Friday evening.
After trailing by as much as 16 in the second half of Saturday's
matchup at Greensboro, the Hornets made a furious comeback to cut
the deficit to just three on two different occasions and two points
once in the final minute.
Unfortunately for SU, the hosts made seven of eight
opportunities from the charity stripe to ice the victory.
Katherine
Flint led Shenandoah with 17 points while classmate Alexis Hargbol had
12 points and nine boards. Mandy Johnston
greatly fueled the comeback with nine of her 13 points coming on
3-pointers during that final run.
