ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Host N.C. Wesleyan finished off a weekend
sweep over Shenandoah University with an 11-7 USA South Conference
baseball win over the Hornets Sunday afternoon.
Shenandoah (3-3, 0-2 USA South) had jumped out to a 4-0 lead
when senior Scott Van
Dusseldorp hit a grand slam HR to left in the first, but
Wesleyan (5-3, 2-0) refused to fold its tents.
The Bishops got themselves back in it with single runs in the
third and fourth, and after SU plated a run of its own in the
fifth, scored six times in their half of the frame.
NCWC scored the six runs on three hits and two walks off of
three Hornets pitchers with Brian Allen knocking in three of the
runs on a triple and Pat Laffin hitting a solo HR.
Shenandoah attempted to make things interesting by getting two
runs in the eighth and putting a pair runners on in the ninth
before John Child posted his second save in as many days by getting
pinch hitter Chris
Ferry to ground out to third base.
Jon Holcomb,
Cory Nelson, Mike Smith, Tucker Brown and Van
Dusseldorp all had two hits each for the Hornets with Holcomb and
Smith driving in one run apiece and Van Dusseldorp four.
Sophomore Bryce
Sears (0-1), the third of six SU pitchers, was tagged with the
loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits and one
walk in 1/3 of an inning.
Justin Diener improved to 2-1 on the spring by scattering five
runs (all unearned) on seven hits in 6.0 innings. Child got the
final four outs for his fourth save.
Shenandoah is back in action on Wednesday with a non-league game
at Bridgewater.
