WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Washington & Jefferson was
victorious in its 2010 season opener Sunday afternoon with a 13-10
non-league women's lacrosse victory over Shenandoah.
The Presidents (1-0) jumped out to a 9-5 lead by halftime over
the Hornets (0-2) and then held on for the victory.
Shenandoah rallied from a 12-5 deficit with four of the last
five goals (and also had a goal called back for an illegal stick),
but could not dig itself out of the hole it dug for itself in the
first half.
With the Hornets leading 3-2 following a Sara
Mucciaro goal at 23:26 of the first, W&J reeled off
five unanswered to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Mucciaro finally ended this spurt with goal off of a Sydney
Anderson assist 6:52 before halftime, but the damage was
done.
The Presidents scored two of the final three goals of the first,
and added three straight in the first six minutes of the second
half to take that seven-goal advantage with just over 24 minutes to
play.
Mucciaro had half of the hosts goals with Jennie Ott and Morgan
Fields adding two each.
Anderson, who had three goals last week, led all players with
two assists. Fields also had one.
SU held a 30-13 advantage in groundballs and also took 32 of the
game's 53 shots.
The Hornets are back in action on Tuesday at home against
Division II Shepherd.
