WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 8/23 Shenandoah University won its
ninth straight non-conference baseball game Thursday evening with a
15-7 victory over Montclair (N.J.) State.
For the second straight time, SU (12-4) had to rally for the
win.
This time, the Red Hawks (4-3) scored four runs in the first
inning on a Kevin Bond grand slam and led 6-3 after pushing across
a pair of runs in the top of fourth.
The Hornets had an answer, however, scoring five runs on three
hits and two Montclair errors in their half of the inning to take a
lead they would not relinquish.
Shenandoah chased Red Hawks starter Jack McDonough (0-2) in the
process; McDonough allowed eight runs (five earned) on nine hits
and one walk in 3.0 innings. He departed after facing five batters
in the fourth.
The rally made a winner of junior Bobby
Stefanowicz (4-0). Stefanowicz, the fourth of six Hornets
pitchers on the day, came on the in the middle of the second and
allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings of
relief work.
Stefanowicz struck out six before turning it over to Patrick
Moore to start the eighth.
Moore struck out two of the three batters he faced in his only
inning of work before Kyle
Scallion worked a scoreless ninth to close out the contest.
SU had 17 hits in the game with No. 9 hitter Adam
Delauter doing most of the damage on a 4 for 5, 5 RBI day.
Delauter had RBI singles in the second, fourth, seventh and eighth
innings.
Six other players had two hits each with junior Greg
Van Sickler leading this group by going 2 for 5 with three runs
batted in.
Bond drove in five runs for the visitors.
With its scheduled bye weekend upon itself this weekend,
Shenandoah will continue non-conference play this Saturday and
Sunday by taking on Franklin & Marshall in a three-game set.
First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00.
