WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball team set
new school records for runs and hits in a game in a 35-13
non-league win over St. Joseph's (L.I.).
The Hornets (18-5) scored nine runs in the first, four in the
second and a combined 13 runs in the fourth thru sixth innings to
turn the game into a rout over the Golden Eagles (5-8).
The 35 runs scored breaks the school record of 32 set against
Franklin & Marshall last season and equalled later in 2009
against Catholic.
The 33 hits breaks the hits record set in the F&M contest.
Additionally, sophomore Cory Nelson set a
new school record with six hits. Nelson finished his day 6 for 6
with five RBI before being pinch hit for in the seventh.
All nine starters got at least one hit with Nelson, Kevin Brashears, Jesse
Henry and Keaton
Neeb getting at least three each.
Brashears and Henry missed hitting for the cycle by failing to
hit a triple while Neeb needed to just a home run to complete his
cycle.
The team hit for the cycle in the fourth with Brashears hitting
the home run, Nelson the double, Neeb the triple and Scott Van
Dusseldorp the single.
Shenandoah used 23 field players and six pitchers in the win
with 15 of the field players getting a hit.
Junior Brian
Goddard (1-2) was the winning pitcher despite giving up 11
runs on 10 hits and five walks in 5.0 innings.
St. Joseph's actually led the game 4-0 after the top half of the
first after Frank DiPresso hit a grand slam to dead center.
SU answered that production with nine runs on nine hits, chasing
SJC starter Justin Dierkes (2-2) in the process. Dierkes gave up
all nine runs and nine hits while walking one. He last 2/3 of an
inning.
The Hornets have tomorrow off and are back in action at home on
Saturday in a USA South Conference contest against Christopher
Newport at 1:00.
