FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Birmingham-Southern split its production
equally Saturday afternoon in a 10-7 non-league women's lacrosse
victory over Shenandoah.
The Panthers (2-0) scored five goals in each half to down the
Hornets (1-3) in the first-ever team competition played between the
two schools.
The contest was played at Monarch Stadium on the campus of
Methodist University; B-SC defeated Methodist Friday 20-6 and
Shenandoah has a Sunday date with the Monarchs in a USA South
Conference contest.
Birmingham-Southern, in its second year of NCAA lacrosse action,
scored the opening two goals of the game and never trailed against
SU.
Trailing 5-1 in the waning moments of the first half, Shenandoah
got goals from juniors Jennie Ott and Sara
Mucciaro in an 11-second span to make it 5-3 at the break.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, this would be as close as the
squad would come to their opponents until a three-goal run late in
the contest made it 9-7 B-SC with 3:27 to play.
Mucciaro had two of those three goals in that final run, but
Stephanie Gore tallied unassisted 60 seconds after the second
Mucciaro goal of the spurt to give the Panthers some needed
breathing room.
Mucciaro led all players with four goals and Ott added two goals
and an assist.
Goalkeeper Tori
Beasley made a career-best 14 stops.
