WINCHESTER, Va. - For the second straight day, No. 8/20
Shenandoah University used a sixth inning rally to push itself past
Greensboro College for a USA South Conference baseball victory.
Also for the second straight day, the GC defense failed the
Pride as the Hornets (7-3, 2-2 USA South) completed the sweep with
a 7-6 win.
Greensboro (4-8, 0-4) committed a pair of errors in the sixth
inning Sunday which allowed all three SU runs to be unearned.
The Hornets, who were trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of
the fifth, saw designated hitter Cory Nelson get things
started in the sixth with a single through the left side off of
Pride reliever Cory Saulsbury (1-2).
After Mike Smith sacrificed pinch runner Kurt Krout to second, GC
second baseman Bobby Amato failed to come up with Keaton Neeb's
groundball at second base, allowing Kraut to come all the way
around for the tying run.
A stolen base and a groundout came next before junior Kevin Brashears gave
Shenandoah a lead it would not relinquish by driving in Neeb with a
single to right.
Brashears eventually scored what proved to be the game-winning
run after stealing second base and coming home on Jon Holcomb's single to
right.
The rally made winner of junior Bobby Stefanowicz
(2-0), who came on in relief in the middle of the fourth and
allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk in 3 2/3.
Sophomore Kyle
Scallion recorded the final four outs for the Hornets,
registering his second save in as many days and his third of the
spring. His first out, a strikeout, came with the tying run on
third base in the bottom of the eighth.
In the ninth, Scallion sandwiched his second K around a pair of
groundouts to second.
Holcomb, Jesse
Henry and Scott Van
Dusseldorp all had two hits each for the hosts with Matt Parker
going 2 for 5 with 3 RBI for the Pride.
Shenandoah hosts PSU-Harrisburg on Monday at 3 in a non-league
game.
