ASHLAND, Va. – The No. 14/16 Shenandoah University
baseball team began a season-long five-game road trip Thursday
afternoon by extending its winning streak to six games with a 14-7
victory at Randolph-Macon.
The Hornets (22-5), who were playing their first road game in
two weeks, scored one run in the first and two more in the second
to take the early lead over Macon (10-11).
A five-run fifth gave SU the eventual winning runs. Junior Greg
Van Sickler had the big hit in the frame with a double to left
center to score Jon
Holcomb and Jesse
Henry. Those two men had reached on a single and an error,
respectively.
The two-bagger is the 47th of Van Sickler's
career, tying him with Geoff Williams '00 for the all-time
lead at Shenandoah. He is also currently tied for seventh on the
all-time hits list and is 13 runs batted in from the No. 3 spot
all-time.
Van Sickler finished his day 2 for 4 with three RBI before being
lifted for a pinch runner in the ninth.
Van Sickler's classmate, Kevin
Brashears, was 3 for 6 with four RBI. He had a two-run triple
in the second before driving in a pair with a double to left in the
seventh. Brashears also scored the first run of the game by opening
the contest with an infield single and eventually scoring from
third on a Van Sickler groundout.
Senior Jake
Yocum (2-0) recorded all but the last out to earn the win. He
allowed seven runs (five earned) on 11 hits and two walks in 8 2/3.
Patrick
Moore retired the final batter on a fly to left to close out
the game.
Shenandoah returns to USA South Conference play with a 1:00
contest tomorrow at Averett.
