HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 14/14 Shenandoah University ran
its baseball winning streak to six games Monday afternoon with a
13-2 non-league victory over Eastern Mennonite.
Shenandoah (29-6) scored single runs in the second and third
innings, and after EMU (9-17) tied it with a two-run fourth, SU
broke things open by scoring nine runs in the fifth.
The Hornets sent 13 men to that fifth frame as the first six
reached base safely. Junior Kevin Brashears,
who was named as the USA South Conference Player of the Week
earlier in the day, led off with an infield single and eventually
scored two runs in the inning.
Jon Holcomb
had a pair of singles to center and drove in runs in his two
at-bats.
Shenandoah finished the game by scoring two more runs in the
eighth.
Holcomb led the offense with a 4 for 4 day that included a pair
of RBI. Scott Van
Dusseldorp drove in three and Jesse Henry two to
round out the multiple RBI performers.
Coach Kevin Anderson threw eight pitchers in the contest
with senior Jake
Yocum (4-0) earning the win with an inning of relief. Yocum
gave up two runs on three hits as he pitched the fourth, but was
the recipient of the victory when his offense produced the nine-run
fifth.
SU is off until taking on Averett in the first round of the
conference tournament on Thursday in Burlington, N.C. First pitch
is scheduled for 1:00.
