WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Stevenson University banged out 21
hits Thursday evening to down No. 7/10 Shenandoah University 14-12
in a non-league baseball game.
It was Senior Night at Shenandoah (34-8), and the Hornets
started a different lineup in order to get all 10 seniors a start,
but Stevenson (18-16) did most of its damage against the SU
first-string.
Trailing 5-2 after Shenandoah scored five runs in the second,
the Mustangs got to Greg Van Sickler in the fifth.
Van Sickler (7-2) made just his third-ever relief appearance,
coming on to start the third in place of Nicholas Gregg, and was
roughed up for seven runs on 14 hits in 4.0 innings.
Stevenson sent 10 men to the plate in that fifth
inning, getting seven hits, and took the lead for good on
a Steve Krider three-run HR.
The Mustangs lead eventually expanded out to 14-6 before
Shenandoah made things interesting with five runs in the eighth and
another in the ninth.
The contest ended with the tying run at the plate; Stevenson
closer Patrick Quinn got Cory Nelson to line into a game-ending out
to short with Scott Van Dusseldorp on second following a
double.
Starter Derrick Nason (3-3) earned the win after giving up six
runs on seven hits and three walks in 5.0 innings.
Adam Delauter, in his first action as a leadoff hitter, was 4
for 5 with three RBI for the hosts while Van Dusseldorp, Brett Donahue and Van Sickler all had two hits.
Kevin Brashears, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the
seventh, got the two hits he needed to pass Jeremy Schutt '01 for
the single-season hits record at Shenandoah.
Brashears, who finished 2 for 2 with an RBI, has 83 hits this
season with at least two contests to play.
Shenandoah is now off until opening NCAA Regional play at a
location to be announced on May 19.
