WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University completed its 2010 men's
lacrosse season Thursday afternoon with a 17-6 CSAC loss to Neumann
University.
The loss was the seventh straight for the Hornets (2-12, 0-6
CSAC).
Neumann (3-10, 2-4) took a lead it would not relinquish by
scoring all four goals in the first period. Nick Ferraro got the
first one, on an assist from Justin Mailloux, before Mailloux
scored two more times in the final 7:22 of the stanza.
Shenandoah made matters interesting by getting all three of the
second-quarter goals, two of them by Jimmy Noel, and
trailed by just one heading into the halftime break.
Unfortunately for the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium crowd, NU
scored the initial seven goals of the second half and was never
seriously threatened again.
SU was able to cut the deficit to five, 11-6, on the streak of
a 3-0 run in the waning moments of the third, but the Knights
again had an answer.
James McCauley snapped that 3-0 Shenandoah run with an
unassisted goal two seconds before the end of the third; this
stared a 6-0 run to complete the contest.
Noel led the Hornets with two goals and one assist while Joe Avveduti
had a goal and an assist in his final game in an SU uniform.
Sophomore Sean
Mack was 13 of 22 from the faceoff 'x' and just missed the
school record for groundballs in a season by scooping up 12
Thursday afternoon. Mack needed 13 to tie Ken Gingerich '01 for the
record.
Shenandoah outshot its visitors 36-35, won 37 of 67 groundballs
and had a 16-9 advantage in faceoffs.
