WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 14/14 Shenandoah University ran its
baseball winning streak to three games Thursday afternoon with a
12-6 non-league victory over Eastern Mennonite.
After the Royals (8-14) took a 4-1 lead by scoring two runs in
the first and one each in the second and third, Shenandoah (26-6)
got back into it with a two-run fourth.
Greg Van Sickler, who scored the Hornets first run when Chris Ferry plated him with a double to center, got things started in the
fourth with a double to left center.
Two batters later, Cory Nelson hit what would prove to be the
first of three home runs by the hosts with a two-run blast to left
center.
With the skies darkening in the fifth, Kevin Brashears tied
matters with a one-out dinger to virtually the same spot Nelson hit
his.
Jon Holcomb flied out following Brashears, and it appeared the
game would head to the sixth tied at 4-4.
Except the SU hitters had other ideas.
The next seven hitters reached base safely, with Scott Van Dusseldorp giving Shenandoah the lead for good with a two-run
single to left that scored both Van Sickler and Jesse Henry. Those
two men had reached on singles to left and through the right side,
respectively.
The Hornets sent 11 men to the plate in the frame, scored seven
runs and EMU never threatened again.
Junior Brian Goddard (2-2), who came on to start the third,
allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk in 6.0
innings.
He was the third of four SU pitchers - starter Matt Griffin
lasted 1 1/3 before Brian Fream worked out of a two-on,
one-out jam by striking out BJ Mortimer and Chris Harpine.
Van Sickler and Brashears each had three hits for the victors
with Nelson, Ferry and Adam Delauter getting two each.
Eastern Mennonite starter Casey Harlow (1-1) was tagged with the
loss after six runs on nine hits and one walk in 4 2/3.
Shenandoah is back in action Saturday at 1:00 in USA South
Conference contest against Ferrum.
