FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – No. 7/9 Shenandoah University won its
second game of the Fayetteville baseball Regional Thursday
afternoon, eliminating York (Pa.) with a 9-6 win.
The Hornets (36-8) advance into Friday's winner's
bracket final at 11 a.m. against the LaGrange/Mary Washington
victor with the win over YCP (28-16).
The Spartans took an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the first
and another in the second against SU starter Jake Yocum, the
Hornets climbed back in it with one each in the second and third
and four more in the fourth.
Adam Delauter, Jon Holcomb, Jesse Henry and Greg Van Sickler all
drove in runs in the frame with Van Sickler capping the rally by
knocking a two-out double into right center.
Shenandoah then gave itself some needed breathing room by
tacking on a three-spot in the sixth; sophomore Cory Nelson drove
in two of those runs with a single to left.
Junior Mike Smith got the win for the Hornets, allowing one run
on six hits in 3.0 innings of relief. Sophomore Kyle Scallion
recorded the final four outs to post his eighth save; he allowed
one run on three hits.
Both teams had 17 hits in the contest with Holcomb, Henry and
Keaton Neeb getting three each for the victors. All nine starters
had at least one hit and six drove in at least one run.
