RALEIGH, N.C. – Shenandoah University salvaged a split of its USA South Conference women's basketball weekend road trip with a 79-63 victory over host Meredith Sunday afternoon.
Led by 18 points from junior Mandy Johnston and 17 from senior Sierra Edwards, Shenandoah (8-9, 4-6 USA South) snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory over the Avenging Angels (4-9, 1-7).
The win also keeps SU perfect in four lifetime contests on Meredith's home floor.
The Hornets shot nearly 45 percent (29 of 65) from the field and forced 22 turnovers as it opened up as much as a 25-point lead against MC.
The advantage was 14 points at halftime with Johnston and Edwards both hitting for double figures in the opening 20 minutes.
With the 25-point lead heading into the final five minutes, SU coach Michelle Guyant-Holloway began to liberally substitute.
Five different women saw their initial action of the game during this time, and three of them: Jen Moxley, Katherine Hooker and Sarah Vande Ryt, all registered at least two points.
Meredith used this new Hornets lineup to go on a 21-6 run over a span of 6:24; Vande Ryt finally snapped this streak with a fastbreak layup 24 seconds before the final buzzer.
SU, led by Nicole Gilbertson's nine boards, owned a 44-37 advantage on the glass. The Hornets had 30 points in the paint and outscored their hosts 15-7 in second chance points.
Megan Rahn had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Avenging Angels.
Shenandoah finishes this three-game road trip with a 2 p.m. next Sunday at N.C. Wesleyan.
