Hockey Shuts Out Seahawks

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University field hockey team completed its 2011 season Tuesday afternoon with a 2-0 non-league victory over St. Mary's (Md.).

The win is the second straight for SU (5-13) and is also the first-ever for the Hornets over the Seahawks (6-10).

Liz Grover had the opening goal of the game when she finished off a nice play by senior Megan Garrett at 15:14.

Garrett ran down a through pass and corralled it just before the ball crossed the end line, where she fed Grover right on the doorstep. Grover then redirected the ball past SMC keeper Ananstasia Wash for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

With just under five minutes to play, Maria Payne clinched the contest by knocking home a loose ball in front of the Seahawks net.

Both goals can be viewed here.

St. Mary's outshot SU 18-6 for the contest and also had an 11-7 advantage in penalty corners, but Sarah Clare made five saves and the Hornets took advantage of both of their scoring chances.

Shenandoah opens the 2012 season on August 31 with an away game at Wilson.

The complete 2012 schedule will be posted in January.
