WINCHESTER, Va. - Averett University prevented Shenandoah University from earning its first USA South Conference men's soccer victory of the 2011 season with a 3-0 win over the Hornets Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars (8-3-1, 1-1 USA South) scored goals in the 37th, 46th and 69th minutes to dispatch SU (2-8-1, 0-2).
Richard Bjornander scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just over seven minutes before halftime when he converted a John Thrower cross.
AU tallied 45 seconds into the second half and then closed the book on the day's scoring with a Martin Erenstedt finish of a corner kick at 68:21.
The Cougars outshot Shenandoah 15-11 and had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Hornets keepers Zac Rogers and Anthony Light combined for four saves.
SU is off until taking on Greensboro next Saturday in Greensboro at noon.
