WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team will make its first-ever appearance in the USA South Tournament semi-finals after defeating Meredith College 3-1 Tuesday evening.
No. 2 Shenandoah (14-6) will take on third-seeded Averett in the second game of the semi-finals on Friday at the Smith River Soccer Complex in Martinsville after dispatching Meredith (6-9-2) in the quarterfinal round contest.
Averett advanced to the semis with a 4-3 win over No. 6 Methodist earlier Tuesday afternoon.
The Hornets/Cougars game will be the second of four Friday - the CNU/Greensboro women's contest starts off the day at noon while the two men's semi-finals are scheduled for 5 p.m. and 7:30.
Both championship games will be played on Saturday.
Shenandoah wasted little time in jumping on the Avenging Angels Tuesday evening - junior Katie Cataldo got the Hornets on the board just 2:16 into the game as she ripped a Jessi Dennis cross in from 12 yards out for the game's initial goal.
In the 17th minute, Dennis scored what proved to be the game-winner by re-directing a Amber Womack volley.
Both goals can be viewed here.
After being outshot 12-2 in the opening 45 minutes, MC brought itself back into the game when Eliza Evans scored just 46 seconds into the second.
Fortunately for the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium crowd, SU kept up the pressure and freshman Taylor Oehm gave the hosts some breathing room with a goal at 78:12.
Shenandoah owned a 23-6 advantage in shots while the Avenging Angels had four of the seven corners awarded.
Meredith keeper Kelsey Hopper had 11 saves to keep her team in it.
Kat Terza had three stops for the victors.
