Eastern Mennonite Stops Men's Hoops

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Shenandoah University officially opened up the Rob Pryor era with an 87-61 non-league men's basketball loss to future ODAC rival Eastern Mennonite Tuesday evening.

The Royals (1-0) blew open the game with a 20-8 run to start and never looked back against SU (0-1).

EMU finished that spurt with the final 10 points over a span of 5:08 and led 20-8 by the 9:05 mark.

Eastern Mennonite eventually took a 43-17 lead into the halftime locker room as the Hornets committed 19 first-half turnovers that led to 24 EMU points.

Shenandoah also struggled to a 7 for 32 (21.9 percent) shooting percentage from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

SU battled its hosts following the break, matching the Royals 44 second-half points, but could get no closer than 20 points the rest of the way.

The 20-point deficit came at the end of a 10-3 Shenandoah run midway through the period, but EMU answered with a 7-1 run of its own and coasted home to the victory.

Sophomore Avery Green led Pryor's club with 20 points while Bryce Mitchell added 11. Dominic Chappell and James Bowens rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points each.

Green also had a team-high seven rebounds.

Eastern Mennonite won the battle of the glass 47-39 and ended up scoring 40 points off of Hornet turnovers.

Shenandoah is off until hosting Washington & Lee, another future ODAC opponent, next Tuesday at 7:30.
