FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Shenandoah University completed play in the 2011 South Region Challenge with a 67-49 non-league men's basketball loss to Mary Washington Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles (4-1) emerged as the lone team in the two-day challenge to emerge undefeated.
N.C. Wesleyan, which lost to UMW yesterday, defeated Hampden-Sydney 73-70 in Sunday's first contest.
Shenandoah (0-4) played Mary Washington tight in the opening minutes, trailing just 13-11 thanks to a George Williams 3-pointer with 10:20 remaining in the first.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, this would be the high-water mark for the afternoon.
The Eagles scored 12 of the game's next 15 points to take a 25-14 lead with 5:10 remaining.
UMW then closed the first on a 12-6 run to take a 37-20 lead into the halftime locker room.
Any thoughts of a Shenandoah comeback were quickly extinguished as Mary Washington opened the second with a 12-2 spurt and led 54-30 by the midway point of the stanza.
SU was able to cut the deficit to 14 in the final minute, but would get no closer.
Junior James Bowens led the Hornets with 10 points and six rebounds in the loss.
Shenandoah, on the strength of 50 percent shooting in the second half, shot 39 percent (20 of 51) for the game.
Mary Washington held a 41-38 advantage on the glass.
Walt Smith had 14 for the victors.
SU is off until hosting Penn State – Altoona in a non-league contest on December 7 at 7 p.m.
