Women's Hoops Dominates Blazers

FREDERICK, Md. – Shenandoah University snapped its three-game women's basketball losing streak with a 75-45 non-league victory at Hood College Sunday afternoon.

The win came in the first-ever contest at Hood's BB&T Arena.

Sophomore Sara D'Amico, who helped SU (2-3) out to a 35-22 first-half lead with 13 points, scored the first bucket in BB&T history with her 3-pointer at 18:36.

D'Amico's teammate, junior Nicole Gilbertson, scored the first point in facility history when she hit the backend of a two-shot foul 64 seconds into the contest.

The Hornets jumped out to as much as an 18-point first half lead as Hood (0-4) shot just 29 percent (9 for 31) and missed nine of 10 free throw attempts in the first half.

HC scored eight of final 11 points of the first, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, to cut the margin to 13 at the break.

Hood threatened to make a game of it when the Blazers cut the deficit to 10 points, 41-31, with 13:42 remaining, but Shenandoah had an answer.

The Hornets fed Gilbertson down low on three straight possessions and the junior came through each time to push the lead back out to 16 points.

SU held at least a 15-point lead the rest of the way and led by 32 points on two different occasions in the waning moments of the contest.

Freshman Holly Chittenden the victors with 15 points and 16 rebounds – it is the first double-double of her career.

Gilbertson backed her up with 11 points and 12 boards while D'Amico had 13 points and Crystal Petrus 11.

The Hornets owned a 64-45 advantage on the glass.

Shenandoah opens up USA South Conference play on Wednesday at 7 against Ferrum.
