WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University earned just its second-ever women's basketball victory over Frostburg State with a 51-48 non-conference win Monday night.
Shenandoah (3-5) snapped a two-game losing streak with the triumph over FSU (3-7).
The win is just the second for SU in 25 lifetime meetings with its former Eastern States Athletic Conference rival and comes in the first meeting between the two schools since December 5, 1997.
Shenandoah's other win in the series was a 60-51 victory on December 9, 1995.
SU led the contest 30-19 at the break, but could only watch as the Bobcats came storming back to tie the game at 36-36 with 8:06 remaining.
The two teams remained within three points the remainder of the contest and the Hornets took the lead for the final time when Sam Akers canned a 3-pointer with 3:29 remaining to make it 46-45 Shenandoah.
FSU refused to fold its tents, and after Akers made one of two from the line with 10 seconds remaining, had a chance to force overtime.
The Bobcats turned over the ball with 4.4 seconds remaining, but got a steal on the ensuing in-bounds play to give themselves one more opportunity.
Senior Kerby Hatter then sealed the game for the hosts by blocking Elaina Hummel's shot attempt as time expired.
Akers led the victors with 14 points while freshman Holly Chittenden had 10 points with seven rebounds.
Stephanie Straka had 17 points for Frostburg.
FSU won the battle of the glass 46-35.
Shenandoah is back in action on Saturday at Eastern Mennonite.
