WINCHESTER, Va. - League leading Greensboro College clinched the USA South Conference women's basketball regular season title with a 64-55 victory over homestanding Shenandoah Friday evening.
Greensboro (24-0, 17-0 USA South) will host the upcoming USA South Conference Tournament by virtue of its win over Shenandoah (12-12, 8-9).
The Hornets still have a No. 5 seed to play for, and can clinch it with a win tomorrow at home versus Methodist or a Mary Baldwin victory over Averett.
SU will finish in either the fifth or sixth place spot and travel on Tuesday for the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
Shenandoah gave the Pride all it could handle in the opening 20 minutes, as the two teams traded the lead six times and were tied on six other occasions before GC took over.
With SU holding a 21-18 lead thanks to a Mandy Johnston 3-pointer, Greensboro got consecutive 3's from Nikki Wilborn and Bianca Richburg to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Crystal Williams broke an 8-0 string with a jumper in the lane at 6:08, but the Hornets could not get any closer than three points the rest of the way.
Trailing 33-29 at the break, SU saw the deficit grow to as much as 16 points before cutting it to five in the waning moments.
Sierra Edwards and Johnston led Shenandoah with 14 points each while Haley Smith had 13 rebounds.
Danielle Duncan paced the victors with 20 points and 11 boards.
