Softball Sweeps Catholic

WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University opened up its 2011 softball season with a non-league sweep over Catholic University Saturday afternoon at Henkel-Harris Field.

Shenandoah (2-0) was a 4-3 victor in the opener before rallying to win 8-6 in the nightcap.

Catholic (0-2) had a 5-3 lead in that second contest before SU put up a five-spot in the sixth to help complete the sweep.

Junior Brooke Over (1-0) was the winning pitcher in game one. She struck out eight against three runs on five hits and three walks in the complete game victory.

With the score tied at 2-2 heading into the fifth, Shenandoah put together a two-run inning to produce the game-winning runs.

Senior Ashley Plaugher completed that rally, driving in classmates Cat Pruiett and Renoula Jones with a single to right. Pruiett and Jones both reached on singles.

Pruiett led the game one offense with a 2 for 3 afternoon that included the insurance run scored.

CUA had nine hits to the Hornets five in game two, but the five-run-sixth was enough to secure the victory. Shenandoah sent 11 women to the plate in the sixth, and in addition to Plaugher's two-run single, Jolisa Jones drove in a run with a single to right.

Sophomore Jordan Wolford (1-0) was the winner in relief. She took over for fellow transfer Misty Judd and allowed one run on one hit and four walks in 2.0 innings.

She also struck out two.

SU is back in action Sunday at future ODAC foe Randolph College.
