SALISBURY, Md. – Shenandoah University completed its participation in the Salisbury University Softball Invitational Saturday afternoon by splitting its final two contests.
Shenandoah (8-6) opened with a 9-3 win over No. 18 in the nation Salisbury University before falling 8-4 to Virginia Wesleyan in the tournament finale.
The Hornets jumped all over the Sea Gulls for three home runs in the first two innings of the opener; this offensive onslaught led to four runs in the first, two in the second and two more in the third.
Senior Jolisa Jones had the first of the three roundtrippers when she led off the game with a solo shot to left center. Five batters later, sophomore Lauren McCabe hit a three-run dinger to center.
In the second, freshman Morgan Coble made it 6-0 by taking Salisbury (9-4) reliever Kelly Leary deep over the centerfield fence.
Denise Mitchell and Danielle Zecca had RBI singles in the third before Jones capped the Hornets scoring with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Shenandoah finished with 12 hits on the day including two each by Jones, McCabe and Heather Sink.
Mitchell paced the victors with three hits in four at-bats.
Junior Brooke Over (3-4) was the winner with 3 2/3 innings of relief work. She allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out two.
Sophomore Amanda Litwin started the game and scattered six hits in the opening 3 1/3. Litwin struck out one and walked one.
Erika Brittingham (6-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on four hits and one walk in 1.0 innings. Leary replaced her for the top of the second.
Virginia Wesleyan (10-1) prevented the Hornets from getting a day two sweep with three runs in the fifth and sixth more in the seventh to break open a tie game.
Over allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. She struck out seven before turning it over to Litwin after allowing a leadoff homer in the sixth.
Ashley Plaugher had two of the team's eight hits against the Marlins with McCabe driving in a pair on a two-run HR in the fifth.
SU is off until hosting Averett on Saturday in a noon USA South Conference doubleheader.
