WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 2/6 Shenandoah completed its fourth straight USA South Conference baseball sweep of the season with a 6-5 victory over Methodist Sunday afternoon.
For the third time this week, SU (17-0, 8-0 USA South) won the game in walkoff fashion.
After Methodist (16-9, 1-5) scored five times in the top of the ninth to force the Hornets into using their final at-bat, Clint DeHaven delivered a two-out, bases loaded single to center to plate the game winning run.
Senior All-America Greg Van Sickler led off the Shenandoah ninth with a double to left off of Monarchs reliever Rusty White (1-2), and after being sacrificed to second, Methodist intentionally walked both Nick Beall and Mike Smith to load the bases.
The strategy nearly worked, as White got Keaton Neeb to ground to short, where Brian Inghram cut down Van Sickler at the plate for the second out.
DeHaven then laced the ball just to the left to Corey Sykes at second, who couldn't make a sliding play on the ball.
The hit made a winner of junior Kyle Scallion (3-0), who struck out two MU hitters in the ninth but could not prevent the Monarchs from tying the contest on five hits and an SU error.
Hornets starter Vince Claudio was dominant for the first 8.0 innings - he struck out eight and allowed just three hits before giving up two hits and a walk to start the ninth.
Brandon Thigpen touched reliever Bryce Sears for a two-run single to right before Shenandoah skipper Kevin Anderson called on Scallion to close out the game.
Scallion, after striking out Shawn Lovette, appeared to induce a game-ending 1-2-3 double play, but the relay throw from Neeb to Beall at first base hit Dustin Brown at the bag for a two-base error that allowed the tying run to score.
DeHaven led the victors with three hits while Kevin Brashears drove in a pair.
SU is back in action on Tuesday at future ODAC foe Washington & Lee. Senior Brian Goddard (2-0) is the expected starting pitcher.
