EMU Upsets Baseball

HARRISONBURG, Va. –  No. 1/6 Shenandoah University saw its season-opening baseball winning streak snapped at 19 games with a 4-3 non-league loss at Eastern Mennonite Friday afternoon.

The Hornets (19-1) led 3-0 after scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but saw EMU (7-17) rally with four runs in the seventh.

The Royals sent 10 men to the plate in the decisive seventh, scoring the last one unearned when Chris Harpine reached on an error.

One batter prior, designated hitter Beau Banglesdorf tied the game with a double to left off of SU starter Mike Smith (1-1).

Smith allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.

The Hornets had an excellent chance to tie it in the eighth, loading the bases with no outs, but Nick Beall was cut down at the plate attempting to score on a Smith fly to center. One batter later, the Royals escaped the threat when Kurt Krout flied to right.

SU scored its first two runs without the benefit of a hit.

In the fifth, senior Clint DeHaven led off the frame by being hit by a pitch and reached third on a pair of sacrifice bunts.

With Kevin Brashears at the plate, DeHaven was able to scamper home on a wild pitch.

One inning later, DeHaven plated classmate Greg Van Sickler on a bases loaded fielder's choice.

Krout scored the team's final run with a leadoff single in the seventh,  moving to third on two groundouts and then coming home on a wild pitch.

Shenandoah travels to Lynchburg on Sunday for a 1:00 non-league contest.
