Softball Sweeps Bishops

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Shenandoah University earned its second straight softball sweep with 6-4 and 13-11 USA South Conference victories at N.C. Wesleyan Saturday morning.

Shenandoah (13-7, 3-1 USA South) needed nine innings to get that 13-11, game two victory over NCWC (6-16, 3-5).

In the opener, SU scored one run in both the first and second innings and then two each in the third and fourth to off-set a Wesleyan grand slam HR in the Bishops third.

Winning pitcher Brooke Over (8-4) figured in the game-winning run as she led off the Hornets fourth with a single to left.

Pinch runner Shatora Lane, in for Over, was sacrificed to third and eventually scored on a error by NCWC pitcher Kacie Brandes (1-2).

Senior Catherine Pruiett, who had reached on a error when she was attempting to sacrifice Lane to second, scored an insurance run on a Renoula Jones infield single.

Freshman Heather Sink paced the victors at the plate with two hits and two RBI in three at-bats while Over was also 2 for 3.

In the circle, Over struck out 10 and allowed the four runs on five hits.

Game two was a wild affair in which the Hornets rallied from a 5-0 deficit with five runs in the sixth.

After SU took a 7-5 lead in the eighth, Wesleyan rallied on the strength of a two-run HR to send it to the ninth.

Shenandoah plated six runs in the top of the ninth only to see the Bishops nearly come all of way back with four of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Ashley Plaugher was 4 for 4 while Over had four RBI to lead the Hornets at the plate.

Over also got the win in relief, giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks in the final 3.0 innings. She struck out six, including the final hitter of the game.

SU is back in action on Monday at 3:00 in a pair of USA South Conference games at Christopher Newport. These games were originally scheduled for Sunday but delayed due to the weather forecast in the Hampton Roads region.
