Captains Sink Softball

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Host Christopher Newport swept a USA South Conference softball doubleheader from Shenandoah University Monday afternoon.

The Captains (18-18, 5-1) were 6-1 winners in the opening game before completing the sweep with a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.

In game one, CNU scored three runs in the bottom of the third to break a 1-1 tie with the Hornets (13-9, 3-3).

Shenandoah scored its lone run in the third on a Morgan Coble single up the middle. Coble's one-out, bases loaded single plated Jolisa Jones, who had singled to center as the second batter of the frame.

Senior Renoula Jones had two of the Hornets seven hits.

Brooke Over (8-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs on six hits and four walks in 5.0 innings.

SU was held to just five hits in the nightcap, including two from freshman shortstop Heather Sink.

Sophomore Amanda Litwin (0-2) took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk in 4.0 innings. She struck out four before classmate Jordan Wolford pitched the final two innings.

Shenandoah is back in action on Thursday at Ferrum for a USA South Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00.
