Softball Sweeps Pride

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team earned a huge doubleheader sweep with two USA South Conference wins over Greensboro College Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets (17-10, 7-4 USA South) needed just five innings to dispatch Greensboro (18-14, 10-4) 9-1 in the first game before getting a walkoff single in a 3-2, game two victory.

Shenandoah got all of the offense it would need in the first inning of game one by scoring a pair of runs on two extra base hits sandwiched around a walk.

Heather Sink got things started with a two-out triple to left center before Ashley Plaugher drew a walk. Freshman Morgan Coble then drove in both Sink and Plaugher with a double to left.

A seven-run fifth ended matters early – SU sent 10 women to the plate with Denise Mitchell driving in two runs on a triple to center.

Sink had the final hit of the game, clearing the bases with a double down the left-field line.

Junior Brooke Over (11-5) struck out seven in the complete game performance. She also walked one and gave up the one run on three hits.

Sink and Mitchell each went 3 for 4.

After falling behind 2-0 after one in the nightcap, Mitchell promptly tied matters with a two-run HR in the bottom of the second.

The two teams were then each held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Lauren McCabe singled up the middle to lead off the frame.

Catherine Pruiett attempted to sacrifice McCabe to second and both were safe as GC pitcher Kelsey Sanfilippo bobbled the bunt.

Jolisa Jones won it by singling up the middle off of reliever Hannah Pannell to plate McCabe with the game-winning run.

Jordan Wolford (5-1), who came on in relief of Over in the first, earned the win. Wolford scattered five hits and one walk in 7.0 innings of work. She struck out two.

Shenandoah continues USA South Conference play on Tuesday with a 4:00 doubleheader against Mary Baldwin.
