Salisbury Ends Baseball's Season

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Salisbury University ended Shenandoah University's reign as South Region champions with an 8-7 victory Saturday afternoon at USA Baseball Stadium in Millington.

Salisbury (33-12) will represent the South Region at the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships after sweeping Shenandoah (37-7) in a pair of games Saturday.

The Hornets, who were seeking a third straight trip to Appleton, Wisconsin and the championships, saw the Sea Gulls score single runs in the seventh and eighth to secure the victory.

Shenandoah had roared back from 6-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh, but could not hold it.

Brian Green scored the eventual game-winning run by reaching on a one-out single and second on a Tyler Bennett single to left off of Hornets closer Kyle Scallion (6-2).

Scallion, who came on in third with SU down 5-0, allowed three runs on 10 hits and one walk in 5 1/3.

All-America Greg Van Sickler replaced Scallion but could not make his first relief appearance this season a positive one as designated hitter Chris Connor singled to left to drive in Green.

Nick Beall, who was one of four Shenandoah players named to the All-Tournament team, was stranded on first base as the game ended. He had reached on a two-out single.

Van Sickler, Ben Hendrickson and Cory Nelson all joined Beall on the All-Tournament team.

Beall and Nelson both had three hits in the final game of the year.

The loss ends the career of a class of 11 seniors - a class that won 133 games, two South Region titles, one USA South Conference regular season title and one USA South Tournament title.
