Marymount Runs Past Men

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Marymount University combined a strong shooting performance with domination on the glass to down Shenandoah 83-73 in non-conference men's basketball action Wednesday evening.

The Saints (4-10) shot 56 percent (24 of 43) from the field and held a 32-20 rebounding advantage to earn just their third-ever victory over Shenandoah (3-11).

It was the 18th lifetime meeting between the two schools.

With SU leading 50-49 following an Xavier Alston jumper in the paint with 9:32 remaining, Marymount seized control with a 13-0 run over the next 2:20.

Freshman James Bowens finally snapped the streak by hitting a fastbreak layup at 6:19, but the damage was done.

Shenandoah would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

The visitors, who shot 61 percent in the second half, also drained 32 of 38 attempts from the charity stripe (26 of 31 in the second half) to seal the victory.

Marymount had 11 second-chance points to the Hornets 4 off of that rebounding edge.

Jesse Konadu had a game-high 17 points for the victors with freshman Ross Heyl posting a season-best 16 for Shenandoah.

Avery Green and James Bowens backed up Heyl with 13 and 12, respectively.

Tonight's game completes non-conference play. SU hosts Greensboro on Saturday at 4 p.m. in a USA South Conference contest.
