SALEM, Va. – Kenyon College won the 2012 Morris Cregger New Year's Day Classic by rallying for a 66-63 victory over Shenandoah University Tuesday afternoon.
Shenandoah (2-10) had an eight-point lead with just over five minutes to play, but could only watch as Kenyon (6-6) stormed back.
The Lords scored eight straight points to tie it at 61-61 with 2:50 remaining, and after Dominic Chappell gave SU a 62-61 by hitting the backend of a two-shot foul, KC got the game-winner in the waning moments.
Brian Lebowicz, who led all scorers with 20 points and was named tournament MVP, hit that game-winning shot by draining a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining.
Chappell attempted to tie for SU with a baseline '3', but his attempt went off the back iron as time expired.
The in-season tournament championship would have been the first for the Hornets since winning the Hampden-Sydney Tournament in December 2006.
Junior Avery Green, who was named to the All-Tournament team, paced Shenandoah with 16 points. Bryce Mitchell and freshman Ross Heyl backed up Green with 10 points each.
SU held a 38-34 advantage on the glass despite being held to just three offensive rebounds.
This is the first time all season that the Hornets have won the battle of the glass.
Shenandoah opens up USA South Conference play tomorrow night in Danville against Averett University. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 tip.
