Hockey Overthrows Royals

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University wrapped up its 2012 ODAC Field Hockey season Wednesday evening with a 3-2 victory over Eastern Mennonite University.

Shenandoah (10-7, 4-4 ODAC) ties Washington and Lee for fourth place in the league by downing the Royals (4-12, 3-5).

Official pairings for the ODAC Tournament will be released later this evening by the league, but SU is likely to face W&L in Lexington on Saturday at a time to be announced.

Wednesday's contest was a back-and-forth affair with EMU notching the game's first goal at the 48:20 mark.

Freshman Tori Finney tied it for the Hornets at 61:55 before senior Amber VanHorn gave Shenandoah its first lead by converting an Alexandra Darrow penalty corner insertion at 63:17.

The Royals were not finished, however, tying the game at 2-2 at 66:49.

Exactly one minute later, freshman Sarah Brock scored the game-winner unassisted to give SU its 10th victory of the season.

Shenandoah also successfully defended an EMU corner in the final 30 seconds to preserve the one-goal advantage.

SU outshot its visitors 14-8 with Eastern Mennonite holding a 6-5 advantage in corners.

Sarah Clare had three saves for the victors.
