FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team gave No. 13/16 Mary Washington all they could handle Tuesday night in a non-league contest before falling 64-50 to the Eagles.
Shenandoah (1-3) found itself in a six-point ballgame with just 6:22 remaining only to see UMW (3-0) score 11 of the game's final 14 points.
The Hornets trailed by as much as 11 midway through the first before an 11-4 run over a span of just 1:58 late in the first cut the SU deficit to just two, 31-29, with 2:20 remaining.
Unfortunately for the SU faithful, Mary Washington sandwiched an 11-2 run of its own over the halftime intermission to retake control of the contest.
Shenandoah kept the deficit in single digits for all but 72 seconds until the Eagles made that fateful run over the final 2:44.
Junior Sara D'Amico paced the Hornets with 13 points while classmate Crystal Petrus added 12 and sophomore Holly Chittenden 11.
Mary Washington dominated on the glass, grabbing 49 of 76 missed shots and holding a 17-3 advantage in second chance points.
The Eagles also scored 16 points off of 20 Hornets turnovers.
Aby Diop had a game-high 15 points for UMW.
SU is back in action on Sunday at nationally ranked Lebanon Valley.
