Women's Basketball Wins Fourth Straight

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team completed its fall semester schedule in style Monday night with a 54-51 non-conference overtime victory over St. Mary's of Maryland.

The win is the fourth straight win for SU (5-6).

Sophomore Holly Chittenden, who led the Hornets with 20 points and 15 rebounds, hit what proved to be the game-winning shot with a turnaround jumper in the lane with 20 seconds remaining in overtime.

St. Mary's (5-4) missed a jumper on the ensuing possession and then fouled freshman Corin Scott after Scott pulled down the defensive rebound.

Scott then hit one of two from the line, making the second, to give SU the three-point lead.

The 'Hawks missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with one second left.

Shenandoah led virtually throughout the contest after scoring the first eight points of the game. St. Mary's, which was averaging 70.8 points per game, was held to 13 points in the opening stanza as it shot just 13 percent (3 of 24) from the field.

SU maintained this lead until the 'Hawks capped off a 24-12 with a Joanna Murray jumper at the 5:12 mark. From this point on, the two teams stayed with four points of one another for the remainder of the contest.

The Hornets did have the opportunity to win in regulation, but Chittenden's layup went off the back rim with three seconds left.

In addition to Chittenden's 20, Crystal Petrus had 10 points and 10 rebounds with Imani Heggins adding 10 points.

It is Chittenden's fifth double-double of the season and the first of Petrus' career.

Shenandoah is now off until hosting Marymount on January 2 in a 7:00 non-conference contest.
