WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Christopher Newport University continued its winning ways Wednesday evening with a 68-52 USA South Conference women's basketball victory over Shenandoah.
CNU (19-5, 14-3 USA South) led throughout over the Hornets (9-15, 6-11).
The Captains, made an appearance in the national semi-finals last year, shot 45 percent in the first half to take a 39-32 lead and then outscored SU 29-20 after the break to secure the victory.
The win is the 11th straight for CNU over Shenandoah.
Leading 50-44 after Sara D'Amico hit a layup at 12:53 for the Hornets, Christopher Newport pulled away by scoring the game's next 10 points in a span of 5:30.
From this point on, SU was not able to get any closer than 14 points.
The Captains biggest lead of the evening was 18 points.
Sam Akers had a game-high 25 points for the hosts while Tia Perry paced the victors with 18 points.
Jelisa Bowser added 16 and Camry Green 15 for CNU.
The Captains had a 45-32 advantage on the glass and used that advantage to outscore Shenandoah 16-6 in second chance points.
SU completes its regular season on Saturday with a 2:00 game at Greensboro.
