WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Misericordia snapped a long baseball winning streak by sweeping No. 21/RV Shenandoah University in a non-league doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Misercordia (2-0), which played in the 2011 NCAA Regionals, was a 9-2 winner in the opener before rallying to take the nightcap 7-4.
The two losses are the first for Shenandoah (1-2) at home since the final regular season game of the 2010 season. SU had won 20 straight home games prior to losing game one Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets committed seven errors in that opening contest, including one each by all three outfielders.
Cougars pitchers Patrick Clark and Matt Karabin combined to hold SU to just six hits on the day and just two over the final four innings.
Junior Joey Donofrio had three of those six hits, finishing 3 for 4, and led off the Hornets third with a home run to right.
Shenandoah led 2-1 after three in the nightcap, but Misericordia touched game two starter Cory Nelson (0-1) for three runs in the fifth before adding one in the sixth and two more in the seventh to finish off the sweep.
Game two starter Evan Robaczewski (1-0), a transfer from Division I Pittsburgh, struck out five and all four runs (three earned) on three hits and one walk in 6.0 innings to earn the win.
Matt Karabin stranded a pair of runners in the seventh to earn the save.
Donofrio again was the story on offense, going 1 for 3 with two RBI.
SU had just five hits in the nightcap.
Shenandoah is back in action again on Monday at 3:00 against King's (Pa.). Sunday's scheduled game against Mount Aloysius has been moved to Tuesday at 3:30 due to the expected poor weather to hit the northern Shenandoah Valley tomorrow.
